Carol Tarn is a portrait and figurative artist based in London. She paints in oils and will work to private commission.

In 2015 Carol was shortlisted for the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize and also selected for the Society of Women Artists Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries.

Carol has worked from her studio in North London for the last ten years painting people from the unknown to the very well known. In her portraits she attempts to go beyond the likeness to capture the essence of her subjects, directing their gaze to draw the viewer in. She often incorporates personal objects and references, some requested by the sitter, creating a narrative that reveals the sitter’s very self. She paints in a style that has been described as painterly yet realistic, both colourful and descriptive. Carol’s work is a mixture of commissioned and self generated projects. In addition to her commissioned work she has a particular interest in Theatrical Portraiture and is creating a growing collection of paintings of well known actors from the London stage.

Carol is also an established teacher of portrait painting and offers classes from her studio at the Chocolate Factory in Wood Green North London. Each class is limited to a small size with the emphasis on traditional techniques in a relaxed studio environment.
